Ignite Hope
Event Date: Saturday, December 9, 2023
Gather your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues, and walk with us on Saturday, December 9, to ignite hope and healing. Ignite Hope is a family festival and candlelit walk for the community to shine their lights in support of the patients and families for the holiday season. Over 3,000 people come together to show support for the children that are unable to spend the holidays at home.
Background: The annual tradition started at Phoenix Children’s in 2012 when friends and family of 15-year-old Katie Wagner, a patient battling cancer, held a candlelight vigil outside her hospital window. The tradition has continued each year since and continues to grow in community participation.
Event: Kicks off at North High School with a festival featuring music and entertainment, the Kids’ Zone, Santa’s photo booth, superheroes, sponsor booths and refreshments. At dusk, Santa leads participants (from atop a fire truck) on the 1-mile candlelight walk to the hospital. Walkers carrying battery-lit candles and greet patients peering down from their rooms as they hold candles of their own.
